“Combat Outpost”
The Guardian has just posted my latest film, “Combat Outpost”,
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/video/2009/feb/13/us-military-afghanistan-outpost
which was filmed in Oct 2008 in Kunar province in Afghanistan. This is the craziest place I have been in my career, and the month I spent living with US Marines in that hole in the ground was insane. The place was shot at almost every day, and not just with AK-47s. The Taliban/Al Qaeda/local insurgents used 107mm rockets, RPGs, mortars, DSHKA heavy machineguns, PKM, etc.
The film is quite frenetic, but I think it really shows the futility of trying to hold these small bases without enough soldiers toproperly influence the area. “It’s just one big target” said one Marine, and I agree.
